Crossbow cocking devices come in two main types: a rope cocker, which cuts the felt draw weight roughly in half and works on almost any crossbow, and a crank cocker, which drops the effort to about 5 to 15 pounds and often lets you decock the bow as well. Both put the string in the same place every shot, which is the real reason to use one. Cocking by hand on a 150 to 300-pound crossbow is hard on your back and almost always latches the string slightly off center, which sends bolts left or right.

Use a cocking device every time you cock a crossbow. A rope cocker is the cheap, simple choice and is enough for most crossbows up to about 200 pounds of draw weight. Why shouldn't you cock a crossbow by hand?
Modern crossbows have draw weights between roughly 150 and 300 pounds. A few compact models go lower and some recurve crossbows go higher. Pulling that with your bare hands is possible on the lighter models, but it causes two problems that a cocking device removes.
Uneven string position
When you pull by hand, your stronger arm always pulls a little harder. The string reaches the latch with one side a fraction of an inch further back than the other. The trigger holds it there. On release, the string does not push the bolt straight down the rail, and the bolt lands left or right. A quarter inch of offset at the latch can move the group 2 to 3 inches at 20 yards and more at 40. Shooters often blame the scope or the bolts. Injury risk
Pulling 175 pounds while bent over a stirrup loads your lower back and shoulders badly. If your grip slips, the string snaps forward and can catch fingers on the rail. A rope cocker keeps your hands on soft handles well above the rail. A crank keeps them on a handle at the back of the stock.

Rope cocker
A rope cocker is a length of cord with a handle at each end and two hooks in the middle. The hooks catch the string on either side of the rail. The cord runs up through the handles so the rope works as a simple 2:1 pulley. A 175-pound crossbow feels like roughly 85 to 90 pounds, split between two arms. Rope cockers cost little, weigh almost nothing, and fit nearly every crossbow with a foot stirrup. They cannot decock a crossbow, so you still need a discharge target or decocking bolt at the end of the day.
Crank cocker
A crank uses a spool, a gear set and a pair of hooks or a claw that ride on a cord or strap. You turn a handle and the gears do the work, so the effort drops to about 5 to 15 pounds no matter what the draw weight is. Detachable cranks mount to a plate on the stock and come off for hunting. Integrated cranks live inside the stock with a fold-out handle. Cranks are slower and add weight and cost, but many of them let you wind the string forward under control, which is decocking without firing a bolt.
How do you use a rope cocker?
The whole point of a rope cocker is an even pull. Every step below is about keeping both sides of the string level.
If the string latches on one side before the other, the pull was not level. Decock and repeat rather than shooting.
How do you use a crank cocker?
A crank is slower but almost impossible to get wrong once the hooks are seated. The sequence is nearly the same for detachable and integrated models.
Decocking with a crank
This is the biggest advantage a crank has over a rope. If the maker rates your crank for decocking, you attach the hooks to the cocked string, take up the slack, release the trigger latch the way the manual describes, and wind the string forward slowly to its rest position. No bolt is fired and nothing hits a target. That matters at the end of a hunt in the dark, and it matters for safety in general, because the alternative is shooting a bolt into a discharge target every time. Not every crank is rated for this. Some older detachable cranks can cock but not decock. Read the manual and never try to decock with a rope cocker. How do you keep cocking consistent?
A cocking device removes most of the error, but two habits close the gap between a good group and a great one.
- Mark the string at the rail center. With the crossbow uncocked and the string resting in place, put a small dot of marker on the serving exactly at the center of the rail. After every cock, check that the dot sits in the middle of the latch. This takes one second and catches an off-center latch before you shoot.
- Check the serving every shot. Look at both sides of the rail. The bare string should show the same amount on each side of the serving. If one side shows more, decock and re-cock.
- Use the same stance. Same foot in the stirrup, same grip position on the rope, same pace. Consistency in cocking is as important as consistency in aiming.

How do you cock a reverse-draw or recurve crossbow?
Reverse-draw crossbows
On a reverse-draw crossbow the limbs face backward and the string sits near the front of the rail when uncocked. The power stroke is longer, so the string travels further to the latch. Rope cockers still work, but the rope needs to be long enough for the extra travel, and some makers sell a model-specific rope. Many reverse-draw crossbows come with an integrated crank as standard because the long stroke makes hand cocking impractical. Follow the manual for hook placement; on some models the hooks sit forward of the cams rather than beside them.
Recurve crossbows
Recurve crossbows have no cams or cables, so the string is easy to reach and hook. The catch is draw weight. Recurve crossbows need more draw weight to reach the same speed as a compound, so 200 to 300 pounds is common. A rope cocker works and is the standard choice, but expect 100 to 150 pounds of felt effort. If that is too much, most recurve makers sell a detachable crank that mounts to the stock. Recurve crossbows can often be decocked by hand with a rope cocker if the maker allows it, because there are no cams to skip, but only do this if your manual describes it.

How do you maintain a cocking device?
Cocking devices fail slowly, then all at once. A few minutes of inspection each month prevents a string letting go under full load.
- Rope wear. Check the cord where it passes through the handles and where it sits in the hooks. Fraying, glazing or flat spots mean it is time for a new rope. They are cheap; replace rather than repair.
- Hooks. Look for cracks in plastic hooks and sharp edges on metal ones. A sharp hook cuts the serving, and a cut serving is a string failure waiting to happen.
- Crank cord or strap. Inspect the full length. Replace if you see broken strands or a kink that will not straighten.
- Crank gears. Wipe out old grease and grit once a season and apply a light coat of the lubricant the maker recommends. Do not use heavy grease that collects dust. Listen for grinding or skipping, which means a worn gear or a broken pawl.
- Mounting plate and screws. On detachable cranks, check that the plate on the stock is tight before every session.
- String and serving. Wax the string and check the serving after every session. A cocking device puts the same load on the string as a hand pull, so the serving still wears.

Crossbow cocking safety
- Keep your fingers and thumb below the rail from the moment the bow is cocked until the bolt leaves it.
- Confirm the safety is on after every cock. If it did not engage, the string is not fully latched. Decock and start again.
- Never cock or transport a crossbow cocked inside a vehicle. Decock before you get in.
- Never cock a crossbow with a bolt already on the rail.
- Point the crossbow at the ground during cocking, with nothing in front of the stirrup.
- Never dry fire, and never decock by pulling the trigger with no bolt loaded.
Most crossbow injuries happen during cocking and decocking, not during the shot.
